Even as a Christian there was a time when I thought playing in the Major Leagues would lead to ultimate satisfaction, so getting there became the purpose and plan for my life. But deep down I knew that I was missing the mark. Success, by the world’s standard, really wouldn’t fill that empty part inside of me that desired real purpose and meaning in life. I was looking to baseball instead of the Lord. While in the minor leagues, a teammate reminded me that having a right relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ brings greater joy and peace than anything this world has to offer. He pointed me to Jesus’ statement in John 14:6: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.” Here were direction, and meaning, and real life! I had trusted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior when I was younger, realizing and admitting to God that I was a sinner, going my own way lost and separated from Him. And I trusted Jesus that He died on the cross for my sin, and that He was buried, and that He rose from the dead on the third day. This is the message the Bible says is of first importance (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). In Mark 1:15 Jesus commands, “repent and believe in the gospel.” Will you obey Him and receive eternal life, or reject Christ and remain lost? Read Romans 3:23, 5:8 and 6:23. Know that God loves you and sent His Son to die for you. What will you do with Jesus? Only in Him is there life (1 John 5:11-12).
