Leviticus 5 & Psalms 3-4

Leviticus 5

    “If anyone sins in that he hears a public adjuration to testify, and though he is a witness, whether he has seen or come to know the matter, yet does not speak, he shall bear his iniquity; or if anyone touches an unclean thing, whether a carcass of an unclean wild animal or a carcass of unclean livestock or a carcass of unclean swarming things, and it is hidden from him and he has become unclean, and he realizes his guilt; or if he touches human uncleanness, of whatever sort the uncleanness may be with which one becomes unclean, and it is hidden from him, when he comes to know it, and realizes his guilt; or if anyone utters with his lips a rash oath to do evil or to do good, any sort of rash oath that people swear, and it is hidden from him, when he comes to know it, and he realizes his guilt in any of these; when he realizes his guilt in any of these and confesses the sin he has committed, he shall bring to the LORD as his compensation for the sin that he has committed, a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat, for a sin offering. And the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin.

    “But if he cannot afford a lamb, then he shall bring to the LORD as his compensation for the sin that he has committed two turtledoves or two pigeons, one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. He shall bring them to the priest, who shall offer first the one for the sin offering. He shall wring its head from its neck but shall not sever it completely, and he shall sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering on the side of the altar, while the rest of the blood shall be drained out at the base of the altar; it is a sin offering. Then he shall offer the second for a burnt offering according to the rule. And the priest shall make atonement for him for the sin that he has committed, and he shall be forgiven.

    “But if he cannot afford two turtledoves or two pigeons, then he shall bring as his offering for the sin that he has committed a tenth of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering. He shall put no oil on it and shall put no frankincense on it, for it is a sin offering. And he shall bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take a handful of it as its memorial portion and burn this on the altar, on the LORD's food offerings; it is a sin offering. Thus the priest shall make atonement for him for the sin which he has committed in any one of these things, and he shall be forgiven. And the remainder shall be for the priest, as in the grain offering.”

    The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “If anyone commits a breach of faith and sins unintentionally in any of the holy things of the LORD, he shall bring to the LORD as his compensation, a ram without blemish out of the flock, valued in silver shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, for a guilt offering. He shall also make restitution for what he has done amiss in the holy thing and shall add a fifth to it and give it to the priest. And the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering, and he shall be forgiven.

    “If anyone sins, doing any of the things that by the LORD's commandments ought not to be done, though he did not know it, then realizes his guilt, he shall bear his iniquity. He shall bring to the priest a ram without blemish out of the flock, or its equivalent for a guilt offering, and the priest shall make atonement for him for the mistake that he made unintentionally, and he shall be forgiven. It is a guilt offering; he has indeed incurred guilt before the LORD.”

(Leviticus 5 ESV)

Psalm 3

A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son.

    O LORD, how many are my foes!
        Many are rising against me;
    many are saying of my soul,
        there is no salvation for him in God. Selah

    But you, O LORD, are a shield about me,
        my glory, and the lifter of my head.
    I cried aloud to the LORD,
        and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah

    I lay down and slept;
        I woke again, for the LORD sustained me.
    I will not be afraid of many thousands of people
        who have set themselves against me all around.

    Arise, O LORD!
        Save me, O my God!
    For you strike all my enemies on the cheek;
        you break the teeth of the wicked.

    Salvation belongs to the LORD;
        your blessing be on your people! Selah

(Psalm 3 ESV)

Psalm 4

To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.

    Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!
        You have given me relief when I was in distress.
        Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!

    O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame?
        How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah
    But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself;
        the LORD hears when I call to him.

    Be angry, and do not sin;
        ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah
    Offer right sacrifices,
        and put your trust in the LORD.

    There are many who say, “Who will show us some good?
        Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!”
    You have put more joy in my heart
        than they have when their grain and wine abound.

    In peace I will both lie down and sleep;
        for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

(Psalm 4 ESV)

Something to Consider

Psalm 4 (a prayer): Father, it's such a tremendous truth that we can hardly hold it firmly in the forefront of our minds; You are the God of the universe who has pronounced Your people as righteous and who powerfully works within us that we may live righteously. Thank You that sin no longer defines me nor determines how I will live. Thank You for the promised hope that You hear our prayers on account of the righteousness given to us and the access granted to us through the accomplishment of Christ - Your Son and our Salvation.

Father, please forgive me for pursuing things that are not in line with Your counsel and instruction. Help me to pursue a holy life walking in line with the prompting of Your Spirit and the truth of Your Word. Oh Lord, please grant me rest of mind and thought in order to consider the way I'm living and to properly repent where repentance is needed. Thank You Father for Your patience and pure forgiveness.

Father, I offer myself to You as a living sacrifice, and I entrust my life to You, Your will and the indwelling of Your Spirit. The world around us seeks for satisfaction in the fleeting pleasures of what this world declares we must have. However, You alone are what we need and ultimate satisfaction can only be found in an intimate relationship with You. What an amazing love You, our Creator, have offered us - Your creation! Thank You good and gracious Father that I live in rest with assurance of Your love because of the restoration of our relationship made possible through Christ alone. Amen.
