Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God… Walk as children of light and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. (Ephesians 5)
As those who have been freely forgiven by the grace of God through the work of Christ, and as those who have put on the new self that is empowered by the Holy Spirit, we ought to be seen by the world around us as a new kind of humanity that is created after the likeness of Christ himself.
The Christian life is a life of trusting our Lord, imitating his holiness, sharing his kind of love, giving thanks for all things and trying to discern what is pleasing to God. This means that the Christian’s life ought to be clearly visible as a different kind of life and ought to always stand out in stark contrast to the life of the average human in society.
Other than your worldview and what you believe, what sets you apart from those around you? Do you think around you even notices that you are a new kind of human who belongs to a new kind of kingdom in service to a resurrected King and empowered by the Holy Spirit?
Does your life give anyone any reason to believe that this is true about you?
If, as Scripture tells us, we are to be imitators of God, servants of Christ and children of light then by those very definitions we ought to be curious creatures in the eyes of the culture.
And so, we cannot be living for Christ and yet still find ourselves looking just like everyone else around us.
As the light of the world, we ought to never find our lives blending in with the darkness of this world. Instead, the darkness of this world ought to be our opportunity to shine even brighter. The Christian life gives us a higher power and a higher purpose in life, and so lets live our lives in light of that reality and live curiously different than the average human who doesn’t know this power or embrace this purpose.
